A MATTER OF Balance: MANAGING CONCERNS ABOUT FALLS
Matter of Balance

Area Agency on Aging 3 offers this program for those concerned about falling. 

It is designed as a free, 8-week workshop.  Participants attend one class each week for 2 hours.

  • 8 week workshop, 8-12 participants

  • Meets for 2 hours, 1 x per week

  • Developed at Boston University, adapted by Maine Health

  • Specifically designed for those age 60+ who are ambulatory and have fallen or have a fear of falling

  • Facilitated by 2 trained, peer coaches

Subjects addressed include:

  1. Exercise

  2. Home safety

  3. Assertiveness

  4. Goal setting

  • 6 week workshop, 8-12 participants

  • Meets for 2.5 hours, 1 x per week

  • Developed at Stanford University

  • Specifically designed for people with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes

  • Facilitated by 2 trained, lay leaders

Subjects addressed include:

  1. Nutrition/menu planning

  2. Communication

  3. Problem solving

  4. Exercise

  5. Action plans

  6. Relaxation

Tai JI QUAN: Moving for Better Balance
Tai Ji Quan

Tai Ji Quan: moving for better balance® is a research-based balance training regimen designed for older adults at risk of falling and people with balance disorders. Developed at Oregon Research Institute and focuses on propagating health by addressing common, but potentially debilitating, functional impairments or deficits.

Subjects addressed include:

  • improved balance

  • better body alignment and awareness

  • coordinated movements in a circular and flowing motion

  • improved functional ability, such as balance and physical function, to reduce 

     fall-related risks and frequency

Tai Chi for Health
  • 8 week workshop, 8-12 participants

  • Meets for 1 hour, 12 x per week

  • Facilitated by 2 trained, lay leaders

This evidence-based exercise program utilizes Tai Chi’s Sun style for its
ability to improve relaxation, balance and its ease of use for older
adults. Tai Chi for Health has been proven to improve chronic disease
symptoms, arthritis, balance, and fall risk.

Tools for Caregivers
  • ​6 week workshop, 8-12 participants

  • Meets for 1.5 hours, 1 x per week

  • Developed at Oregon State University,

  • Facilitated by 2 trained, lay leaders

Subjects addressed include:

1.   Stress management

2.   Communication with family, friends, medical community

3.   Self-care

4.   Dealing with difficult emotions

5.   Caregiving decisions

 

bingocize

Bingocize® is a 10-week, evidence-based health promotion program that strategically combines the game of bingo, health education, nutrition, and/or exercise.

  • ​10 week workshop

  • Meets for 1 hour, 2 x per week

  • Developed at Western Kentucky University

  • Facilitated by 2 trained leaders

Program goals:

  • Increase physical activity

  • Improve and/or maintain mobility and independence

  • Learn and use health information focused on falls reduction, nutrition, and other health related behaviors

  • Socially engage with older adults.
